Ice is not safe on Portage, Manistee Lake by Manistee, Hamlin Lake, Pentwater Lake, White Lake but it is getting close as the ice has formed and many think the perch fishing will be fabulous this year as big perch were in this fall. Many think this weekend or the first of the week ice should be safe to walk on

Testimonials

“Martin is one of today’s best fishing educators, and his ice-fishing schools are always top notch. Even if the fish aren’t biting on a particular day, you’ll still learn a ton about ice fishing from Mark and the other pro fishermen he engages to instruct. Whether you are a beginner or someone who has been on the ice for years and looking to improve
your skills, Mark Martin’s ice-fishing schools are highly recommended!”

Chip Gross

Ohio Outdoors Writer

“My best advice to anyone who wants to become a more successful ice fisherman is to get out and fish every chance you get, and if you have the time, participate in Mark Martin’s ice schools. You are guaranteed to gain years and years of valuable knowledge and experience from some of the best anglers around in 3 fun filled days on the ice.”

Ernie Plant – Pro Staff

Attending the Mark Martin’s Ice Fishing Vacation School this year in Cadillac on Lakes Cadillac and Mitchell proved to be very educational and tons of fun for me. The time Mark and the Pro-Staff took with each of us was fantastic and I learned many things from the dedicated efforts of these professionals. I look forward to fishing with them and the many friends I made again next year. If you want to learn how to consistently catch fish, I highly recommend attending one of Mark Martin’s schools. It is time well spent and you will enjoy showing off your new knowledge, with your fishing buddies.

Kevin Speer – Michigan’s Hooks & Bullets Magazine

“I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Mark Martin’s Ice Fishing Vacation School. I learned tips for precision presentation of jigging Raps and spoons for winter walleyes, got hands-on instruction with the latest technology and got one-on-one tips on how to quickly eliminate unproductive water. Mark and his instructors are great down-to-Earth guys who are good for lots of laughs between lessons.”

FISHING CONDITIONS ON LAKES CADILLAC AND MITCHELL

FISHING CONDITIONS ON LAKES CADILLAC AND MITCHELL
FROM PILGRIM VILLAGE FISHING SHOP

Dylan,-Tyanna,-Eric

The Manton Gang, Dylan, Tyanna, Eric and Austin. had a good day on Lake Cadillac, 33 1/2″,6.6 lb.,Pike.34″, 10.5 lb., and 32 1/2″, 8.7 lb.

Even after the warm temperatures and rain we have fishable ice both Lakes adillac and Mitchell.
We receive numerous phone calls everyday on the ice conditions. Currently there’s 4 inches in the lowest spots to 8 inches. The weather is changing to our favor. It’s getting cold. Teens and low 20tyd are forecasted for the highs. You’ll be able to hear the lakes growl as they make ice day and night.

Snowmobilers and Cross Country skiers are out of luck. No snow of any amount is predicted. Anglers are happy not to deal with snow on the ice.

Pike reports have been good and consistaent. Lots of flags producing Big Northerns. Over 30 inchers have been common.

Mixed reports of rapie and panfish. Those fishing Lake Mitchell’s Coves have been catching decent numbers in the 8 to 10 inch range. Keeper gills have been hand size.

The panfish appetite isn’t too particular. The dry baits, waxworms, spikes and mousees. All are working. Crappie enjoy small minnows.

Anglers can be seen fishing Kenwood Park on Lake Cadillac. You will have to sort but many decent size oerch are caught between tip-up flags.

Everyone wants to catch walleye. WEe hear most about the Coves. No one is saying much other than catching some of the recent undersize plantings. Handle them with care. Let them grow to maturity.

Ice creepers might be good investment until we get some snow on the ice. It’s slick out there. We hear stories of portable shanties sliding around.

We Survived the Rain

Most Lakes made it though the rain today with Higgins Lake being a casualty on the North-end as it is wide open, the south-end held the ice so maybe by this weekend a few will be getting out and fishing pike.

Most shallow lakes north of M-55 are still reporting 5 to 8 inches of ice but fishing was slow with the wind and rain. Fish will get back on the bite as the cold front passes

Cold weather is back as 30 degree’s as writing this blog, and will be in the twenties by morning.

Lyman’s on the Lake Reports

A lot of people out on the ice today, but not a lot of action. A few pike and some pan fish, but no Walleye to brag about. The ice is still around 6″ thick and we’re expecting freezing temps for the next several days. If the ice gets to 7″, we will begin hauling out our smaller rental shanties on Monday or Tuesday. Reservations are highly recommended.

This is for Dave L. who chose to leave town for Florida yesterday….Here’s our own Clare and Chip showing just a small fraction of what they caught.
Clare caught 9 Walleyes (kept 3 for dinner) and over 20 Pike in an undisclosed location. This brings Clare’s Walleye total to over 300 for the year. Mostly catch and release, so he’s leaving plenty for the rest of us.

Reports from Lymans on the Lake Our own Dave L. checked the ice for us tonight. He found 6 inches of ice with another inch or two of water on top of that about a mile out from the store. He drilled a few draining holes, he said they didn’t quite work out, lets hope for some more freezing weather.

clare_lymans

Clare did it again. 21″ Walleye this time. He said he had good luck in a new spot, but he’s not even giving a hint as to where it is. Just look for a red Honda quad driven by a senior citizen wearing glasses, about 6′ tall with white hair. He smokes Basic Menthol cigs, so if you see several discarded butts around an old auger hole, drop a jig there.

We’re back on the ice!

We’re averaging 100 – 150 phone calls a day all asking — is the ice safe? Anybody fishing?
Many know that the Cadillac Area usually has safe ice and snow before other area. At ths point we’re snow poor and can’t help the snowmobiles. But we have been ice fishing for the past three weeks on good hard ice. The depths vary depending on where you’re at, but Lake Mitchell’s East side is 8 inches, Covess on the West side are 4 to 6 inches. Lake Cadillac’s Kenwood Area and East side are 5 inches. Forget the Causeway for now.

Little snow remains on the ice, Creepers and ice picks are a good idea. The lakes are huge and we haven’t been everywhere. Spud your way because the ice may change in a matter of feet. Leave your quads and snowmobiles home. The lakes aren’t ready for them. It’s an easy walking.
