Traverse City- Warm weather continues to dominate as hunting is at a standstill as deer are moving late. Fishing is good with salmon fishing at peak and perch fishing good with many lakes producing.

FISHING CONDITIONS ON LAKES CADILLAC AND MITCHELL

FROM PILGRIM VILLAGE FISHING SHOP

image

Wow, lately its summer in October!

Most fishing crappie has been successful. No change, the east side of Cadillac is still the place to find them. Nice catches from those using small minnows or jigs. Lately they’ve been about a foot off bottom.

Bluegills are getting harder to find. A few have been reported from the High School area on Cadillac, or west of Kenwood Park.

Pike have been aggressive. Fish the edges of the weed beds with spinner baits. Both lakes are good. Go for the numbers on Mitchell and usually larger ones on Cadillac.

Large and small mouth bass-either lake. Mostly large mouths lately. The water temperatures still in the low sixty’s. Follow the summer patterns.

Perch-water’s warm, they must be deep but no reports of any of any size.

Walleye-if anyone’s catching them, we haven’t heard.

Manistee River-Fill your freezer. The river at or near peak. Still some fresh ones coming up. Flies wobble glos, spawn, spoons or plugs, there’s enough salmon that all methods are working.

Great Color

image

High Rollaway- The color is great and should be peak this week in Northern Michigan. The closer to Lake Michigan the slower the color change, middle of the state is great.

Fishing was great this weekend as many opted for fishing instead of hunting.

Warm Weather Triggers Fishing

image

Houghton Lake- Today going though Houghton Lake gas was down to 2.66 a gallon and the West Access Site is open after major renovations and it looks great. Also the fish are biting and the deer are hiding with the warm weather.

Wixom Lake was full of fisherman as they tried their luck for panfish and bass with a few walleyes sprinkled in.

But the down side of the warm weather is hunting season has started and most animals are moving at night when it cools down.

Perch are still on the bite on most lakes.

Above is another buck I photographed last week in the Houghton Lake area.

Perch Bite

image

Grand Traverse Bay- I’m hearing good reports on perch on many inland lakes with East Grand Traverse Bay has both a whitefish and perch bite with wigglers working best. Lake Margrethe, Higgins, Lake Leelanau, Fife Lake, Big Glen Lake, Long Lake, Manistee Lake and Portage Lake are reporting good perch bite. This is going to be a great weekend to fish as the deer will not move till late with these warm temps.

Betsie River - Has slowed some, but fish are still being caught all the way up to the Homestead Dam.

Manistee River - It’s about peak time for salmon. Despite the warm temperatures, many salmon are now hitting the gravel.

The perch are starting to show up on a few lakes and some are catching bigger perch on East Grand Traverse Bay off of Samulson’s
Cedarville and Hessel - Salmon activity is beginning to pick up but the perch fishing has slowed. Northern pike have been caught off the pier at Hessel and smallmouth bass were caught by those fishing off the rocky points.

By Escanaba, the bass and pike fishing is fair on Little Bay de Noc. The walleye action is slow on the bay. Some salmon are starting to move into the Escanaba and Ford rivers.

Saginaw Bay - Windy conditions made for spotty perch fishing. The better spots to fish were Buoys 11 & 12 at the Spark Plug and Buoys 9, 15 and 16. A few perch were also taken around the commercial nets off Linwood, the Black Hole and off Oak Point which is near Caseville. Bluegills and crappie were caught in the marina at Sebewaing.

Lake Leelanau - Reported good walleye fishing and a great perch bite on the south -end.

Lake Margrethe reports a fair walleye bite with minnows working best and perch are biting also.

Portage Lake - Good numbers of perch are being caught but the fish are small. The big bluegills, sunfish and rock bass are hitting on minnows or wigglers in 25 to 30 feet of water. Anglers trolling along the drop offs are catching good numbers of pike along with a few smallmouth bass.

Wixom Lake the gills and crappie are on the bite right on the drop-off.

Out of the Kalkaska area, the smallmouth bass fishing is very good on Lake Skegemog. Try using a tube or spinner baits. Fife Lake is producing good perch fishing. Minnows are working well as bait in water ten to 12 feet deep.

Higgins Lake - Some boats are still out trolling for lake trout, but angler numbers have dropped with the onset of hunting season. Perch fishing has been good with wigglers working best.

Houghton Lake - This should be a good weekend to target pike and walleye. Look for the panfish such as bluegills, crappie, and rock bass in waters 8 to 12 feet deep.

And at Cadillac, the pike fishing is very good on both lakes Cadillac and Mitchell. The best spots to fish are near the weed beds.

Fishing Report For Bow Opener

image

Interlochen- Warm weather continues and the fishing is getting better with smallmouth bass, walleye and perch biting in the inland lakes. FISHING CONDITIONS ON LAKES CADILLAC AND MITCHELL

FROM PILGRIM VILLAGE FISHING SHOP

It’s a great time to fish our lakes. Weeds are dying, little boat traffic; the shore line has its autumn color - no excuses.

Pike are hitting spinner baits aggressively; fish the edges of the healthiest weed lines. Jerry Pratt from Lapeer shows off a healthy 30 incher. Lots of numbers; lots of action.

See photograph of 6 year old Dylan Brocht. He caught his first walleye, a 16 incher, while fishing on nearby Rose Lake.

Even though John Culp is recovering from a recent operation, he has to fish. He caught his limit of salmon at Grand Traverse Bay.

Salmon are stacking up on the Manistee River. Glow flies and glow wobble glos have been very effective. Most of the fish are in good shape. Fresh, chrome ones are still coming up. Hearing of lots of limits.

FISHING CONDITIONS ON LAKES CADILLAC AND MITCHELL

FROM PILGRIM VILLAGE FISHING SHOP

image

The water temperature is finally cooling down and fishing is really picking up. Few boats on our lakes as many have started hunting or river fishing.

The City Dock area is the place to be if you want crappies. Lately, small jigs have been out fishing live bait.

The number of bass boats on both lakes tell the story if bass are you preference. Several Classic Tournaments have chosen our lakes mainly for small mouths, but never turn away the green ones.

Large pike are cruising the weed beds. See a picture of Kyle Stumbo from Gras Lake. A nice 28 incher for the young angler.

Those seeking walleye on our lakes have been disappointed. However see picture of Mike Townsend of Cadillac. His limit came from the Manistee River. Rapala Count Downs have been effective.

This time of year everyone is salmon crazy. The Manistee River has everyone’s attention. . Lots of fish there and more silver ones coming.

The early deer youth hunt has been a success for many. Aaron Northrup of Cadillac harvested his first buck early Saturday, a nice---8 point. Lynnette Bassford from Boon was also successful early; see her with her first deer, a 7 point. Notice the smiles on their faces. They’ll be hunters for life. Talk from those in the field this weekend is that they’ve seen many bucks especially around the oaks that are dropping acorns.

The perch harvest has slowed as anglers were only catching little ones east of Long Island, in the North Bay and the South Bay. Some big bluegills were caught in and around the weedbeds

Whitehall - Pier fishing has been very good. The early bite was only lasting until about an hour after daylight. The afternoons were slow with the action picking back up from 5pm until dark when casting Cleo’s or mega baits.

Fishing Should Start Picking Up

image

The cooler weather should get fish back on the bite, and a little rain should help. Most are reporting that the fish are not up the river yet in numbers but this cool weather over the weekend will help. The mouth of the Platte River mouth is hot with lots of fish being caught on spawn surf fishing.

FISHING CONDITIONS ON LAKES CADILLAC AND MITCHELL

FROM PILGRIM VILLAGE FISHING SHOP

image

The lakes are cooling down and bass and pike fishing is getting stronger.

BBT’S Bass R Us Classic was held Saturday after a cold front, rain and wind storm passed through Friday.

A Classic is a test of the best and all 26 boats passed. Rich and Aaron Mast out fished the rest with a winning 15.19 pound, 5 fish limit. Eight other teams were in the over 12 and 13 pound range. Eighty-six fish were weighed for a total of 199 pounds. All fish were returned to the lake they were caught--ALIVE.

The pike on Mitchell and Cadillac harassed the tournament fishermen. Many of BBT’s finest said no other lake they fish have so many big pike. See picture of Chris Palmbos from Allendale. His 40 inch, 12 ½ pound pike is on the way to the taxidermist.

We’ve reported before that spinner baits are deadly on pike. Chris caught his on a white/chartreuse searching for small mouths.

Panfish, currently good gills and sunfish have been caught at both entrances and in the canal connecting Cadillac and Mitchell. Have no explanation why they are there. Boat traffic makes no difference. Leafworms or wax worms are their favorite. Few are fishing crappie lately. Those that are report dong best outside the weed line across from the High School on Cadillac.

It’s September but no serious perch are showing up. Lake temperatures are still warm. This will improve.

Manistee River--Many have caught salmon fever. They’re there and the parking lots are filling up. Freshest fish are from High Bridge down river, especially the Bear Creek area. The river is down and clear. At Tippy Dam there is some coho mixed with the kings. All kinds of tackle are working. Some fish flies, others Thudersticks, Rapalas, Cleo’s or spawn. Take your choice.

Perch Bite

image

There has been a good perch bite reported on the south-end of Lake Leelauna with wigglers and minnows working best. Look for Big Glen in Leelauna County to get hot also.

They have also been limits of perch in Fremont Lake, by Fremont, some off Grand Haven and crappie limits at Cranberry lake in 20 ft of water. minnows seem to work best.

Many perch fisherman are going to be unhappy as they will not be any shiner( blue) perch minnows for sale in sport-shops as they are not certified to sell. You can catch your own minnows and use in that lake, but you cannot transport them anywhere.
