Free Fishing Weekend….
This is the 8th Annual King of the Ice Tournament. We started this as a fun tournament of just friends, and it has simply grown with lots of people wanting to join–who all become friends by the end. We wanted it to be for “everyone,” so we do it on free fish weekend–no need for a license. There are no electronics allowed (no cameras, graphs, etc.), to even the playing field.

We wanted it to be affordable, so the entrance fee is only $10. All of that money goes toward the prizes. Five dollars toward the longest perch and $5 toward the longest pike.

We also sell t-shirts to remember the silly, fun day. We try to have them as inexpensive as possible as well. We add to the design each year with the names of the winners and some new element of the event. This year the design has had another “event” added to the design by the original designer, a former student, Wes Eggebrecht. We’re very fortunate, as Wes works for Converse and Nike and other “cool” venues. Check out his work at http://www.phidiasgold.com/

We have a shotgun start at 8:00 and shotgun finish at 4:00. During the day there’s a bonfire at the shoreline typically with a DJ and throughout the day there are raffles and other fun activities.

For more information, to order T-shirts, to register, or for questions: call Josh at 231-357-0534.

This is the only tournament of its kind where you may win a prize,
whether you catch a fish or not. Plan on this event next year.

The cold and snow is confusing the fish. One day a limit of panfish is easy. Usually a bucket of crappies. The next day, fishing the same holes nothing happens. The bite runs hot and cold. More then half the Winter’s over and catches aren’t as easy of First Ice.

The fish are there! Often those using electronics mark plenty of fish but can’t get them to bite. First light and late afternoons into dark has been the best bite. Cut more holes then what you need and hole hop. When the fish are lathargic there’s always a few that want to play.

When fishing lakes Cadillac and Mitchell always set a tip-up. Pike seem to be anywhere and everywhere. This is one species that doesn’t have a clock in their heads. We can catch them all day long. Spear Fishermen tell us they’ve been cursing right under the ice.

Jon-Wier

Ever dream of catching a Big Walleye? Jon Wier’s dream came
true. He’s holding the 7.09 pound, 28″ walleye he caught fishing
on Lake Cadillac.

Smelt – Catches on Green Lake may have improved. Crystal Lake is good for big smelt- Higgins is really slow for smelt

March 1st – The New 2014 licenses will be available.
The Licenses prices and structure have changed.
